These lorries were fitted with wooden bench seats down each side and were the standard transportation for airmen requiring to be taken to their work destination. This was particularly relevant to those working on shift or doing day work at the CCS/Receiver Station on the southern side of Gan. The problem was that the roads to this site were mainly of loose crushed coral and had a great number of major pot-holes and rough surfaces. Heavy rain only exacerbated this situation. It was virtually impossible during a journey to actually sit down on the bench seat and all one could do was to squat and hang on to the sides of the lorry for grim death and hope you would not fall off before reaching your destination. Journeys were usually so bad that the local Maldivians who worked during the day at the Receiver Station nearly always elected to walk to work rather than risk their necks in the lorry. |
